Obituary of Richard Michael Smerigan
July 1, 1948 – December 4, 2019
Richard M. Smerigan. Age 71 of Flat Rock.
Beloved husband of the late Judith Smerigan. Loving father of Theresa Paul, Nicole (Jacques) Belanger, Kelly (Scott) McParland and Christopher (Lidia) Securro. Dearest grandfather of Vincent Joaquin, Alyssa Joaquin, Serena Belanger, Riley McParland and Nolan Belanger. Dear great grandfather of Gabriel Arteaga and Julianna Arteaga. Brother of Laurence (Judith) Smerigan, Ronald (Constance) Smerigan, Debra (Kurt) Smerigan, Denise (Edward) Sikora. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Richard is preceded in death by his parents Michael and Nataline Smerigan, sister Natalya Smerigan and brother Anthony Smerigan.
Richard was born in Swickley, PA to a loving Italian heritage family as the 2nd child of a family of seven. They enjoyed many happy times, even being kind of a prankster to his brothers and sisters. He moved to Michigan and graduated from Melvindale High School. Upon graduation, Richard was drafted into the Army and served in Vietnam.
In the words of his Certificate of Achievement papers, “With his cooperative and cheerful attitude, he won the respect of all with whom he associated.” He was happy to serve his country and very proud to be a veteran.
Richard was an avid reader, in particular, a huge fan of Clive Cussler and collected lots of Star Trek memorabilia.
He and his wife, Judy hosted Little League world series baseball games and the bonds he formed with the families lasted a lifetime. He loved the Red Wings, Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions.
Heaven gained a beautiful soul and the earth one less Angel.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to Downriver Veterans or Wounded Warriors.
