I met Steve at Carolina Animal Speciality & Emergency in Hickory as my first job within an ER. He took me under his wing and answered every question I could ever have. As I got closer to him, he reminded me more over time of my Uncle Bob from Michigan that I lost in 2015. It was one of the first deaths I had been apart of and it struck me with such grief. Everyone around called him “Uncle Steve” but those words were close and dear to my heart. Eventually, for years I worked 3rd shift every week with Steve. We laughed, joked shared many memories. I tried to make sure he had bulk snacks now and then in his locker to take care of himself, buy him treats or a milkshake, his dinner or a drink from the machine.. I’d try to make sure he had a home cooked meal on the holidays and a gift to open at Christmas. I was one of the only people Steve would share food with or his secret cookie stash at work, therefore I considered myself MVP status.. LOL I tried to take care of Rocky and Charlotte when needed as well, all to show how much I loved him and was there for him as much as I could. If you were important in my family, you knew the name Uncle Steve and who he was as even my dogs knew him as such. Steve held such a special place in my heart and a piece of it most definitely went with him when he passed. I added a picture of us together, one of Wink my chihuahua I’m holding and I sitting with Uncle Steve and one of him with my dog Carla.
