Family tribute ~
Larry passed away on March 24th surrounded by his wife Christine, children Maddie and Kyle, and his mom Rose after a courageous battle with cancer.
Larry was born August 16th,1962 at Riverside Hospital in Trenton, MI, and spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Detroit. He was a graduate of Chadsey High School who knew that he wanted to work with his hands in a skilled trades position.
Larry worked in an automotive body shop for 11 years prior to taking a position as a mechanic at Northwest Airlines for 17 years where he met and worked with life-long friends. Larry departed Northwest and opened his own business which he named M & K Custom Body & Paint. M & K for his children – Maddie & Kyle. Larry could take a pile of rust and turn it into a beautiful piece of machinery. When he wasn’t working on restoring a car, he was researching the next car to purchase, or watching endless Barrett-Jackson auto auctions on tv.
He had two passions in life – his children and working on and creating something he could be proud of. Put them together and amazing things happened -- whether it was a kindergarten teacher asking for help to build a sandbox, and they ended up with a life size playhouse or “helping” on a high school float that would turn into a smashing success. He was creative beyond measure and loved to use his skills to help his children excel. There was also no home project that he would not attempt. Need new wood floors? No problem, a trip to Home Depot to buy all the necessary tools we would never need again – and the floors would be installed as well as a professional. Tile the bathroom? No problem, another trip to Home Depot for more tools we would never need again – and the tile was installed.
Owning his own business while the kids were in middle school and high school allowed him to come and go as he pleased and he was always the dad signing up for field trips, getting the kidsto practices, and coaching. He proudly wore the Mr. Mom label.
Both kids attending Michigan created a Michigan football fanatic. Saturday afternoon tailgates with friends in Ann Arbor made for memorable days and nights and forged fantastic friendships. Larry will be remembered for his smile, his hearty laugh, his willingness to always lend a hand, and his wonderful spirit.
