Obituary of Robert Esler

February 10, 1946 - July 29, 2023

Robert 'Bob' Eugene Esler.  Age 77 of Taylor. 

Bob passed away peacefully at his home in Taylor, Michigan on July 29, 2023. He was born on February 10, 1946 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Bob’s parents moved to Independence, Missouri shortly after he was born. He became involved in Boy Scouts at a young age, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout while attending high school. He continued to be involved in Scouting as a Scout Leader until 1981. 

Bob was also in the Navy ROTC while in high school. After graduating from the newly built Raytown South High School in 1964, he joined the United States Navy and served until 1966. While in the Navy he drove a semi for the first time and the desire to drive was born. 

Bob married Cathy Crownover on January 8, 1966, settling in Independence, MO after his time in the Navy was finished. Together they had three children and eventually moved to a hobby farm near Mayview, Missouri. Bob became active in the PTA at his children's school organizing and supervising the annual school carnival and chili supper. He looked forward to building the haunted house every year.

After holding a variety of jobs that Bob felt were unsatisfying, he began training as a full-time driver for Dewey Transit Systems in 1969. In 1979, he fulfilled his dream of owning his own truck and became an owner operator. 

After his first marriage ended, Bob met and married Carol Lee Miller. He moved to Taylor, Michigan in 1981 and made his home here. Bob & Carol Lee made a profession of faith in November 1993 and Faithfully served the Lord until their deaths. Bob was very active as a Lay Minister and dedicated his time and gifts to the Prison Ministry at Jackson Prison.

Having become a widower in 2010, Bob developed a dear friendship with Ruth Tyler. They fell in love and were married in 2012.

Trucking was Bob's passion. He not only drove until shortly before his death, but he served his fellow drivers. He was Executive Secretary of Owner Operators Independent Drivers Association from 1982 until his passing. He was also on the Michigan State Safety Board. Additionally, Bob was the Clerk / Treasurer for the Liberty Association of Free Will Baptists.

Bob is preceded in death by both of his parents, John Esler and Ollie Delaporte. His first two wives, Cathy Zink and Carol Lee Esler.

He is survived by his wife Ruth Tyler, his four children, Angelique Hilburn of Harrisonville, MO; Michelle Rose of Newport, MI; Robert H. Esler of Archie, MO and Monique Esler of Harrisonville, MO. Also survived by eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews and his beloved church family.
