I was living in Saint Clair Shores. My next door neighbor asked me if I would like to meet her friend. She was coming over for a visit and I could check her out. Karen came over and I shook my head up and down. Vigorously. My first thought was that she looked like a librarian. A very pretty librarian. We went on our first date. I took her to Red Lobster. That's where I take first dates.
After dinner we got into my truck and she asked me if we could drive around and talk. I said you betcha. We were born the same year. We seemed to have so much in common. I cannot remember a first date that went so well.
We started driving down Jefferson. I grew up in Rochester and had never driven in the area. We passed Alter Rd. I was kind of shocked. You know, The abandoned stores. bullet holes in the plate glass windows. A different world. We were about a half mile past Alter Rd.and Karen said that we could turn around now.I giggled. She said we need to turn around. Wow. Again it was a wonderful evening.
I took her to the 25th aniversary of a friend of mine. My friend Bob sat with us. Bob grew up in Grosse Point, I introduced them. She said to Bob Did your brother John ever grow up? They had grown up down the street from each other, Wow again. Talk about a you have to be kidding moment.
Karen and were on and off as girlfriend and boyfriend. We remained friends through the years.
She wrote to me about her health problems. From time to time I would look at an obit. Then a couple days ago I looked and she had died.
I will always miss her and think of her. To me she had been a friend and lover.
Rest in peace Karen,
