Obituary of Robert DeLong

June 12, 1942 – April 11, 2022

Robert “Bob” DeLong.  Age 79 of Wyandotte.

Beloved husband of Sandra DeLong.  Loving father of Derek (Jennifer O’Meara) DeLong and Nathan (Shannon Bennett) DeLong.  Dearest grandfather of Alyssa.

Family Tribute

Robert was born in Saginaw, Michigan on June 12, 1942 and raised on his family farm in Laporte, Michigan.  He passed on April 11, 2022 at Applewood Nursing Center. 

Robert attended Midland High School, Delta College and Michigan Technological University, where he received a Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering.  He also attended Wayne State University, where he received a Master degree in Sanitary Engineering.  Robert was employed by Wayne County for 33 years during which time he was the Superintendent of the Waste Sewage Treatment Plant in Wyandotte.

On September 6, 1969, he married Sandra Pretzer (she survives him).  Robert is also survived by his sons Derek (Jennifer O’Meara) and Nathan (Shannon Bennett), the sunshine of his life, his granddaughter Alyssa, sister in-law Kathleen Pretzer, niece Sarah Plumlee, cousins Katy Woodring, Jim (Carol) DeLong and Lynn (Mary) DeLong.  Preceded in death by his parents John and Clara DeLong and in-laws Ervin and Mildred Pretzer.

Bob loved his wife, family and his church, Trinity Lutheran, where he served as an usher for many years as well as being part of the Men’s Club.  He also enjoyed fishing, woodworking and U of M football.  Those who knew his smile and quick wit will deeply miss him.

Thank you to all the staff at Applewood Nursing Center who cared for Bob in these last years.  Thank you also to Elara Caring Hospice for sending Tamika and Shawnia to care for Bob in his final days.
