Family Tribute

Our Dad was born in Delray MI, a Hungarian community of Southwest Detroit in 1930. He was the fourth child of Hungarian immigrants, Istvan and Emerenc Szekely.  Growing up as the youngest, he was a bit of a rebel running around the streets of Delray with his large group of buddies.  He frequented Al’s bar and other joints there but also was an altar boy at Holy Cross Church. He enjoyed many sports as a young teen and excelled at bowling in later years. Throughout his life, he adored his family and truly loved his many friends.

He met the love of his life, Clara Kiraly, at Grez’s Hungarian Village a premier Hungarian nightclub in Detroit. He married her in a beautiful Hungarian ceremony at Holy Cross Hungarian Church on the hottest August day of 1959. They had two children Sandra in 1961, followed by Stephen in 1964. They moved to their first and only home in Trenton when Sandra was two.  Life’s memories with dear family, friends, and neighbors include many parties at the house, singing Hungarian songs, dancing in the kitchen, good food, and drinking…everyone having a great time! They were a part of a wonderful large group of Hungarian friends from Delray and enjoyed many Grape Dances, Holy Cross festivals, and so many other events and vacations where they all laughed and made the best memories!

He worked for 42 years at the Ford Rouge Plant to provide a wonderful safe home for his family. We always had everything because of the hard work and sacrifices he made for us. He worked long hours in that horrible environment sometimes missing holidays, family events and even working swing shifts for multiple years.  He retired from Ford’s in 1992. His favorite past times in his retirement years were a good game of golf, a good read, a good crossword puzzle, and a good shot of crown royal with a beer chaser.  He enjoyed the casino and lottery tickets! He was a wonderful husband and the best dad ever. We truly love him and will forever miss him but take comfort that he is with our mom, Clara, in heaven, together again for eternity. We cherish them both; may they rest in peace.
