Obituary of Gertrude Robert
September 4, 1921 – March 13, 2020
Gertrude Robert. Age 98 of Southgate.
Loving wife of the late Paul Robert. Beloved mother of William (Linda) Robert, Richard (Christine) Robert, Marianne (Kevin) Gasiewski, Charles (Janet) Robert, Paul (Janice) Robert, Suzanne Shomsky and the late Jeanne (Art) Spohn. Dearest grandma of Brian (Heather) Robert, Terianne (Quanah) Stewart, Christine (Michael) Parker, Lisa (Robert) Biter, Nicole (Brian) Inaconne, Alex (Kimberly) Spohn, Kathryne (Adam) Meyer, Caralyne Robert, Brandon Robert, Christopher Robert, Lauren Shomsky and Alysssa (Brendan) Cloonan. Also survived by 11 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by siblings, Sister Mary Jacquemain, Madelyn Mueller Bauer, Patricia Johnson and Arnold Jacquemain.
Family Tribute
Gertrude or Gert, was the youngest of 6 children. Her older sister, Anna died shortly after birth. Her brother, Arnold, was 17 years older than her and was a lawyer who resided in Santa Barbara, CA. Her next sibling was Mary, or after she entered the convent, Sister Marie Concepta and later in life was known as sister Mary Jacquemain. Her next sisters were Madeline and Patricia.
Gert attended Visitation High School in Detroit and graduated in 1939. She worked for US rubber and General Motors as a comptometer operator (precursor to keypunch) until 1951. In early 1950, she met Paul Robert and they wed in 1951. Even though the doctors felt that she needed an operation to have children, Bill was born in 1952, Rick in 1953, and Marianne in 1954. So much for the doctor! With a short rest in between children, Chuck was born in 1958, Jeanne in 1959, Paul in 1961 and Suzanne in 1963. Much of the next 20 years were spent raising children.
She was always calm, guiding and loving. She disliked family conflicts and enjoyed watching her growing family of children (7), grandchildren (10) and great-grandchildren (11). She prayed the rosary daily and hoped all of her children would embrace the Catholic faith. She enjoyed sewing and was a member of the Rosary Altar Confraternity. For many years, she helped decorate the altar and washed/pressed the church linens.
To the very end, she wanted all of her children to know that they were loved.
