To the Torres family:
Southgate has lost one of it's icons with the passing of Councilman Torres. When my family moved to Southgate, it was his name I remember most doing Southgate's work. He showed great passion for his city, her residents, and especially the students.
I can still see him walking in the annual parade, running for election, smoking his pipe, observing the high school field activities, the dedication of Lion's Park in his name, and of course, his famous smile.
Back in the fall, I would see him walking with his 'cadillac', and pushing himself to step further, each time. The end of the driveway, the neighbors house, the corner... until he finally rounded that corner and walked along Leroy. That's when we had our last conversation. We were both walking along Leroy and we took a moment to catch up. He asked me how I was, I asked him. Surprisingly, he told me if I ever needed some help, he would lend his anyway he could. (whether it be campaigning, or through his political support). He was always willing to help out any way he could.
I think one of his legacies should be the Ray Torres Golf Outing, (now called the Southgate Elected Officials Golf Outing). This day of fun and comradery provides funds for our High School students by way of numerous scholarships each and every year.
I offer my condolences to his family and many political or personal friends. He has touched so many lives in our community. 'Ray' Torres will be a name that will be fondly remembered.

ps.... in the video, the visit to see Santa in that 'roller coaster'... I have that exact picture with my family. My mom, dad, sister and I rode that same coaster to see Santa. (he was the scariest santa I ever saw). ;)
