Obituary of Rita Sand
July 16, 1951 - May 23, 2025
Rita Sand, A truly beloved spit fire known affectionately as the “Mouth of the South”
Rita Sand, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. Known for her incredibly warm heart, generous spirit, and unwavering devotion to those she held dear, Rita lived a life rich in laughter, boundless love, and cherished memories. She was also known for her amazing luck at the casino, keno, and a bit of a Spitfire, affectionately known to many as the "Mouth of the South" – a testament to her quick wit and lively personality.
Rita found her greatest joy on the water—whether she was skillfully captaining her boat, patiently fishing, or simply soaking in the peace of a quiet lake day with a book. Her expertise and passion for boating were widely recognized; she was a proud member of the Sunseeker Boat Club and was honored as "Sunseeker of the Year." These moments on the water, especially when shared with family and friends, brought her a deep sense of happiness and contentment. She treasured holiday gatherings most of all, taking immense pride in preparing southern style meals that became the centerpiece of cherished family traditions. Her home was always a place of welcome, warmth, and togetherness, where everyone felt like family.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill; mother, Betty Shingledecker; father, Roy Cobb; stepfather, Big Daddy; and her sister, Martha Wice.
Rita’s memory will live on through her loving family: her daughters, Stephanie Elmore (Mike) and Melissa Hanrahan (Georgie); her grandchildren, Josh Sanders (Jaelyn), Jake Sanders, Zack Pawleszeski (Gabby), and Brooke Pawleszeski; and her great-grandchildren, Liam and Luna. Each of them carries forward her remarkable spirit—her kindness, strength, and the endless love and generosity she so freely gave.
Rita’s legacy is one of deep compassion, quiet resilience, and profound love for family. She touched the lives of many, and her presence will be deeply missed, but fondly remembered by all who had the joy of knowing her.
