Obituary of Lawrence "Larry" Kraft

October 14, 1944 – February 9, 2025

Lawrence “Larry” Kraft.  Age 80 of Wyandotte.

Lawrence Edward Kraft, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, mentor, and friend, passed away in Mesa, Arizona on February 9, 2025, after a gradual decline in health and more severe complications in recent months. He was 80 years old.

Larry was the ever-loving husband of Doris Patterson Kraft and the proud father of their sons, Michael and Stephen. He cherished his daughters- in-law Kaatje van der Hoeven Kraft and Susan Peterson Kraft and found immense joy in being a grandfather to his grandchildren, Andrew and Owen, who brought him boundless happiness.

Born in Ridgway, Pennsylvania, on October 14, 1944, to Vincent and Bertha Kraft, Larry grew up with his sister, Barbara Kraft. He was the last surviving member of his Ridgway family.

A graduate of Ridgway High School in 1962, Larry went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Clarion University in 1966. Shortly thereafter, he began a rewarding career in education, accepting a teaching position at North Warren Elementary School and earning a Master’s in Education from Edinboro University in 1974. Larry spent 20 years shaping young minds at North Warren, teaching 5th and 6th grades. He moved to Beaty Middle School in 1986, where he taught until his retirement in 1996.

After retiring, Larry worked as a sales associate at Carnahan’s clothing store, where he formed lasting relationships with customers and colleagues. He later taught at St. Bonaventure University preparing students for student teaching and serving as an observer of student teachers in classrooms across Jamestown, NY. Larry also worked for NAPA, blissfully delivering auto parts across Warren County. Since then, Larry and Doris enjoyed their winters in Arizona and moved to Wyandotte, Michigan to be near family.

Larry found immense joy in people, from his fellow teachers and coworkers to the communities he was part of. Whether volunteering with youth baseball during his sons’ early years, participating in the Lions Club and as a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, or simply sharing stories and laughter with those he met, Larry’s generosity and kindness knew no bounds. His incredible sense of humor, warmth, and willingness to help others made him a cherished presence in the lives of all who knew him.

Larry’s greatest legacy lies in his role as a teacher and mentor. He had a special way of making each person feel valued, and his lessons extended far beyond the classroom. Whether offering guidance to students or words of encouragement to family and friends, Larry’s impact was immeasurable.

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
